Eyes squeezed shut, mug tipped all the way back, a bear cub in a green pom-pom beanie takes a long, satisfied sip while steam curls up off the rim.
About This Pattern
At 77 x 113 stitches this is the smallest piece in the batch by a wide margin — 4,749 stitches against roughly 9,500 to 37,000 for the others — and it finishes at 5.5“ x 8.1“ on 14-count Aida. That size makes it a realistic weekend-to-a-week project, a good fit for a mug-rack wall or a coffee bar shelf; an 8“ x 10“ frame with a mat gives it room to breathe. The beanie and the hot drink keep it in fall-and-winter territory without any holiday imagery, so it can stay up from October to March. It pairs naturally with our other mug-holding animals, Badger’s Spiced Brew and the Grumpy Koala with Coffee.

Skill Level
The stitch count is beginner-friendly, but 13 colors in a 77-stitch-wide grid means frequent thread changes. The body shades from DMC 3863 Mocha Beige (1,027 stitches) through 09 and 779 Cocoa, outlined in 868 stitches of 310 Black. A confident beginner who has finished one small pattern will manage it fine.

Tips for Stitching This Pattern
The beanie uses three greens — 520, 988 and 164, 366 stitches combined — and the lightest, 164, is only 39 stitches along the top of the knit ribbing. Keep those three on one card, labeled, because they’re close in tone. The steam is 82 stitches of DMC 01 Tin White rising from the mug; it’s a pale gray on white fabric, so stitch it under good light and use a single strand test on a scrap if you’d like it softer than the chart’s two strands. The mug itself is three warm browns (436, 632, 3856) in a small space at the left edge — work it before the paw that wraps around it. See our fall animal round-up for more animals with warm drinks.
