Fall Animal Cross-Stitch Patterns: Highland Cows, Red Pandas & Cozy Mugs

By The Editorial Team · October 10, 2026

Three autumn cross-stitch patterns in a row: a baby Highland cow among oak leaves, a red panda holding an acorn lantern, and a badger hugging a mug of spiced cider

Most fall cross-stitch falls into two camps: leaf wreaths and pumpkins, or full Halloween. Our autumn animal patterns sit in between. They’re built around a character — a calf, a red panda, a badger with a mug — and the season shows up in what surrounds them: oak leaves, knitwear, hot drinks. That makes them easy to hang in September and leave up until the first snow.

Animals Dressed for Fall Leaves

The Baby Highland Cow in Autumn Leaves sits inside a loose ring of oak branches, acorns and chanterelle mushrooms. It’s all warm tans and coffee browns — five browns build the coat alone — so it suits a farmhouse or neutral room where orange would be too loud. If you already love Highland cows, our A Cozy Highland Hug pattern shows a child hugging a grown one, in the same russet palette.

For more color, the Red Panda with an Acorn Lantern is the brightest piece in this group. A red panda in a cable-knit beanie and scarf holds up a lantern shaped like an acorn, with a soft yellow glow stitched around it, standing in fallen leaves and small pumpkins. Hang it next to our Red Fox Curled in Autumn Leaves and the two rust-and-cream animals read as a pair.

Hot Drinks and Knit Hats

Some of the coziest fall patterns are just an animal and a warm mug. Badger’s Spiced Brew has a badger clutching a glass mug of amber cider, the cinnamon stick visible through the glass and a star anise floating on top. It’s the densest pattern here, with only a fifth of the fabric left bare. The Bear Cub with a Steaming Mug is the opposite: at 4,749 stitches and 5.5“ x 8.1“, it’s the one to pick if you want something finished this month.

They join two older patterns on the same theme, the Hedgehog in a Knit Sweater with its mug and maple leaf and the Grumpy Koala with Coffee. Four animals holding hot drinks make an easy coffee-corner gallery wall.

Foxes and a Puppy in Scarves

Not every fall piece needs to go over the mantel. The Red Fox Peeking Around a Door is a tall, narrow panel — 8.3“ x 13.5“ on 14-count — showing a fox in a mustard knit scarf leaning out from behind a weathered wooden door. The shape fits the narrow walls next to doorframes and at the ends of hallways, and hanging it next to a real door is half the fun.

For a fox that isn’t hiding, the Red Fox Holding a Maple Leaf stands in full view in a green scarf, a maple leaf held up and a satchel at its side. It pairs with the Golden Puppy in a Cable-Knit Scarf, a floppy-eared dog wrapped in a chunky rust scarf — nine colors, and the outlines are dark navy rather than black, which keeps the face soft. All six of our foxes are compared in our fox pattern round-up.

Our Recommendation

If you want one fall piece to finish before Thanksgiving, stitch the Bear Cub with a Steaming Mug: it’s under 5,000 stitches and needs only 13 colors. If you’d rather spend the whole season on something, the Baby Highland Cow is the centerpiece of this group — at 21,022 stitches it’s a long project, so buy all the browns at once and read our guide to planning a large cross-stitch project first. If you want your fall wall to tip into October, our witchy Halloween round-up picks up where this one stops. For the badger and its woodland friends, see our cozy woodland fantasy round-up, and when your piece is done, our guide to finishing and displaying your stitching covers framing options.
