A capybara stretched out on a beach towel in a striped bucket hat and floral trunks, eyes closed in the universal pose of an animal that has fully checked out for the day. At 97 x 80 stitches, it’s a bigger canvas than most single-motif pieces, with room for the toe-curling contentment on its face to actually read.

About This Pattern

Capybaras have become one of the internet’s favorite “unbothered” animals, and this design leans into that reputation instead of going for a realistic nature portrait — striped hat, tropical-print trunks, and a beach towel with its own busy pattern running underneath. It’s a fun gift for anyone who’s already deep into capybara memes, and the beach setting makes it a natural fit for a summer-house gallery wall or a “vacation mode” throw pillow. The towel’s pattern is the most stitch-dense part of the design, so it rewards someone who doesn’t mind a bit of detail work alongside the simpler solid-color body.

Every stitch is a full cross stitch, but 25 colors and nearly 4,000 stitches means more thread management than a beginner piece — you’ll be juggling bobbins rather than working through one or two dominant blocks. DMC 310 (black, 766 stitches), 437 (light tan, 710 stitches), and 3772 (very dark desert sand, 639 stitches) together cover just over half the design, so once those three are blocked in you’re mostly filling in smaller accent colors on the towel and swim trunks.

Tips for Stitching This Pattern

Start with DMC 310 for the capybara’s outline and facial features first — it’s the single largest color block at 766 stitches and it anchors every other shape on the page, so getting it down early keeps the rest of the piece aligned. Then move to 437 and 3772 for the body fill before tackling the beach towel, since the towel alone uses over a dozen of the smaller accent colors (several appearing fewer than 20 times) and is much easier to place accurately once the capybara’s silhouette is already solid underneath it. Several colors near the bottom of the legend — like 823 (navy) and 472 (avocado green) — appear only once or twice, so keep the chart close by rather than trying to eyeball those single-stitch placements from memory. Stitch it alongside our penguin in a Hawaiian shirt and sloth with a coconut cocktail for a matching beach-themed trio — see our funny animal round-up for the full set.
