Curled up on a crescent moon, a pointy-eared elf child sleeps with a small gray owl held close, both of them with their eyes shut. The child’s blue gown is scattered with tiny stars, and faint constellations are traced across the moon itself.
About This Pattern
Moons and sleeping children are classic nursery themes, and this design makes it fantasy without making it busy: almost the whole palette is blue, so it reads as calm from across a room. It’s a natural baby-shower or new-baby gift, and the finished size — 14.3“ x 15.0“ on 14-count — is big enough to hang above a crib or a reading chair on its own. The elf ears are the only fantasy detail, which means it works just as well in a room that isn’t otherwise themed. For a lighter, quicker owl in the same night-and-magic theme, see our Wizard Owl with Star Wand.

With 28,018 stitches, this is the second-largest pattern in the batch. Two blues dominate: DMC 312 Baby Blue Very Dark (8,065 stitches) and 791 Cornflower Blue Very Dark (5,978) — together half the design. Add 939 Navy (4,247) and 334 Baby Blue (2,884) and you have four close blues covering most of the moon and gown, with the stars and constellation lines picked out between them. The color changes inside the gown are where it gets demanding.

Tips for Stitching This Pattern
Stitch the moon in sections rather than racing through the large 312 and 791 areas — a gridded fabric or a water-soluble grid pen helps here, because a 200-stitch-wide blue curve gives you very few landmarks to count from. Buy blue in bulk: the 312 alone needs several skeins, and the same dye lot matters more on a big flat blue than on a busy multicolor area. The smallest color in the chart is DMC 3855 Autumn Gold: just 5 stitches, which form the owl’s beak. Mark it on your chart so you don’t stitch past it and later wonder where the gold went. Our nursery and kids’ room round-up has more ideas for a baby’s room, and our guide to planning a large cross-stitch project covers buying enough blue from one dye lot.
