Choosing Your First Cross-Stitch Fabric

If you’re picking up cross-stitch for the first time, the fabric aisle can feel overwhelming. Here’s what actually matters when you’re starting out.

Aida Is Your Friend

Aida cloth has an obvious grid woven into it, which makes it the easiest fabric to count and stitch on. Most beginner patterns — including ours — are written for 14-count Aida, meaning 14 stitches per inch.

What “Count” Means

The count number refers to how many stitches fit per inch. Lower counts (11 or 14) mean bigger, easier-to-see stitches — great for first projects and for stitchers who prefer larger, chunkier designs. Higher counts (18, 22, 28) pack in more detail but are harder on the eyes.

Color Matters Too

White and antique white are the most common choices and work with almost any color palette. Once you’re comfortable with the basics, colored or patterned fabric can add a fun twist to simpler designs.

Our Recommendation

Start with 14-count white or cream Aida. It’s inexpensive, widely available, and forgiving if you need to unpick a few stitches while you learn. That same 14-count recommendation holds if you’re drawn to the bolder, blockier look of pixel art cross-stitch — fabric count matters even more there, since it controls how crisp the flat color blocks look once stitched.

If you’re choosing fabric for a big pattern, work out the finished size before you buy: our guide to planning a large cross-stitch project shows how to size the fabric and how much to leave around the edges.
