Chin resting on one paw, the other held up in a peace sign, a fluffy cream kitten in an oversized witch hat pouts a kiss at the viewer. Around it on a stone ledge: a human skull, two small pumpkins and a stack of leather-bound spellbooks.

About This Pattern

This is the witchy, slightly gothic end of Halloween — real skull, dark stone, a navy-black hat — but the kitten’s expression keeps it funny rather than dark. It’s the largest pattern in this batch at 256 x 238 stitches, finishing at 18.3“ x 17.0“ on 14-count, so treat it as a statement piece: a framed wall centerpiece for October rather than something for a small hoop. Fans of spooky-cute decor and anyone with a fluffy, sassy cat of their own are the obvious audience. For a smaller, simpler witch cat, see the Black Kitten Carrying Jack-o’-Lanterns; for the witch herself, The Secret Ingredient shares the same dark sense of humor. If you need a pumpkin piece you can finish this October instead, The Pumpkin King Portrait is 6,273 stitches.

37,299 stitches and 22 colors. Three dark colors — DMC 939 Navy Blue Very Dark (11,767 stitches), 844 Beaver Gray Ultra Dark (7,640) and 451 Shell Gray Dark (7,053) — make up over 70% of the stitching, between the hat, the cape, the outlines and the stone ledge. The fur is the hard part: the kitten’s fluffy outline breaks into scattered single stitches of gray and cream.

Tips for Stitching This Pattern

Start with the face, not the big dark areas. The blue eyes are only 122 stitches (931 and 3761) and the pink nose, lips and paw pads are 141 stitches of 3778, and getting the expression right early keeps you motivated through the long stretches of navy and gray. On the stone ledge, mark off finished blocks on a printed chart as you go — 844 and 451 are both dark grays and look similar under artificial light. For a piece this size, use a scroll frame or Q-snaps rather than a hoop — a hoop large enough would crush the stitches you’ve already finished. Before you buy fabric, read our guide to planning a large cross-stitch project — this one needs a piece about 24“ square. More designs in the same mood are in our witchy Halloween round-up.
