About This Pattern

This is classic Halloween iconography — black cat, pumpkins, witch hat, candy corn — drawn cute rather than spooky, so it works on a front door or in a kids’ room as easily as on a mantel. The orange is loud and saturated, which makes it read from a distance; at 10.1“ x 10.8“ on 14-count it’s a near-square that suits a round or square frame. More than half the fabric is left bare (55% unstitched), so the stack of pumpkins carries the whole composition. It makes a witch-cat set with our Magical Witch Cat on its broomstick and the more gothic Witch Kitten with Skull and Pumpkins. For a pumpkin with a personality of its own, The Pumpkin King Portrait puts a jack-o’-lantern head on a gentleman in a black suit.

At 9,534 stitches this is the most approachable Halloween piece in the batch. Three colors do most of the work: DMC 939 Navy Blue Very Dark (2,899 stitches) for the kitten and outlines, 741 Tangerine (2,572) for the pumpkins, and 29 Eggplant (1,893). The pumpkin ridges and carved faces are bold, simple shapes.

Tips for Stitching This Pattern

The candy corn is scattered across the whole design — DMC 973 Canary Bright (146 stitches) and B5200 Snow White (93) appear from the top edge to the bottom — so end off between pieces rather than carrying yellow thread across the back, where it will show through the bare white fabric. The kitten’s face packs three tiny colors into an area about 20 stitches wide: 3855 and 422 for the eyes and 152 Shell Pink (just 9 stitches) for the tongue. The kitten is near-black navy rather than true black, which keeps it from looking flat next to the orange. See our witchy Halloween round-up for its darker companions, or our kawaii Halloween round-up for gentler ones.
