Choosing an animal pattern
Check two things on each card before you open a pattern: the finished size and the difficulty. Finished sizes are measured on 14-count Aida, so a design listed at about 5 inches fits a small hoop, while one over 12 inches is a framed wall piece. On 16-count fabric the same chart comes out about an eighth smaller.
Animal charts get harder where fur and feathers are shaded with several close tones of one color. Before you start an Intermediate or Advanced design, sort those neighboring shades onto a labeled floss card by DMC number; it is the easiest way to avoid mixing them up halfway through.
