Choosing a fantasy pattern

Fantasy designs tend to be detailed, with shaded cloaks, carved staffs and small charms, so the difficulty label and finished size on each card matter more here than in most themes. If you are new to cross stitch, choose a single character before a full scene.

Many of these suit a child's room or a gift for a fantasy reader. Large designs read best in a simple frame with a plain mat, which keeps the eye on the character rather than on the border.
