Free Small & Mini Cross Stitch Patterns
From tiny motifs a couple of inches across to small designs that fill a hoop, every pattern here is 100 stitches or fewer on its longest side, which is about 7 inches or less on 14-count Aida. They are listed smallest first, so the miniature charts come at the top, and each free mini cross stitch pattern is a printable PDF with the symbol chart and the DMC thread list. Small does not always mean easy: some of these pack a lot of colors into a few square inches, so check the difficulty on each card. For a first project, start with the beginner patterns.

A design under about 3 inches fits the front of a greeting card, the end of a bookmark, a fridge magnet or a 3-inch ornament hoop. From 4 to 7 inches it suits a 6- to 8-inch embroidery hoop, which can hang on the wall as its own frame, and a few small pieces framed side by side fill a shelf or a kitchen wall.
Cut your fabric at least 3 inches bigger than the design on every side, so it fits the hoop and leaves room to frame. To turn a small design into a true miniature, stitch it on finer fabric: on 16-count Aida it comes out about an eighth smaller than on 14-count, and on 18-count about a fifth smaller.
