About this baby fox cross stitch pattern
The fox sits on a bare, snow-dusted branch with a few pine twigs, almost lost under an oversized cream-and-orange beanie. Its round eyes, orange fur and white chest are outlined in black, and the branch runs right across the design, so it reads as a small winter scene rather than a floating portrait.
It suits a nursery, a gift for a baby born in winter, or a seasonal hoop that goes up once the leaves are down. The Hedgehog in a Knit Sweater makes a matching bundled-up pair, and our fox round-up compares it with the other foxes. For more snowy designs, see our winter cross stitch patterns.
What you need
- Fabric: 14-count Aida in white, cut to at least 19“ x 19“ (3“ around the design for hooping and framing).
- Thread: 25 DMC colors, about 26 skeins in total, stitched with two strands. The main colors are 310 Black (2,910 stitches), 950 Desert Sand – Light (1,568), B5200 Snow White (1,532) and 741 Tangerine – Medium (1,248).
- Needle: a size 24 tapestry needle.
- Stitches: full cross stitches only, with no backstitch.
Difficulty and stitching time
It’s rated Intermediate. Twenty-five colors sounds like a lot, but black, Desert Sand and Snow White alone cover 6,010 of the 12,422 stitches. Many of the other colors appear only a handful of times, as highlights in the eyes, on the beanie and in the snow.
Expect roughly 120 to 210 hours at a steady 60 to 100 stitches an hour. More than half the area is bare fabric, so there’s no background to fill in.
Tips for stitching this pattern
- Sort the tiny colors before you start. Ten of the 25 colors are used fewer than 60 times, and 3799 Pewter Gray – Very Dark is a single stitch. Keep them on a labeled card, apart from the three main colors, so you’re not hunting for one skein every few minutes.
- Lay in the big areas first. Black, Desert Sand and Snow White give the fox, the beanie and the snow their shapes. Once they’re in, the small accent colors are easy to place.
- Stitch the snow after the bark. The white snow on the branch sits right against dark brown and black, so finish the darker branch colors first and dark fibers won’t drag into the white.
Size, fabric and framing
On 14-count Aida the finished design measures 12.4“ x 12.4“ (31.5 x 31.5 cm). On 16-count it comes out at 10.8“ x 10.9“, and on 18-count at 9.6“ x 9.7“. For the 14-count version, a 16“ x 20“ frame leaves room for a mat.
A plain white mat keeps the snowy branch crisp, and the square design also looks good in a large round hoop over the winter months.
